I had the wonderful opportunity yesterday to make my exegesis presentation for my Greek Exegesis class on the Pastoral Epistles. My particular passage is 1 Timothy 6:11-16. The presentation went well, though I have come to full determination that I am not at all gifted to work with Greek for the rest of my life on a high level of scholarship. I do enjoy working with some aspects of language, which I know will profit my future ministry endeavors, but as for doing my PhD work Greek is not what I am all about. In working through the section I discovered how much more there is within the text than what is relayed to us through the various English translations we have available. Certain phrases and words that are used so artfully by Paul (I do believe Paul wrote the Pastorals) to demonstrate a point are completely lost in our contemporary translations. An example is in order:

In 1 Tim. 6:16 we see at the end of the doxology there that Paul uses the terms "timay kai kratos" which translate to "honor and power". Seems quite simple yet the implications are quite profound. You see in the Greek the word "kratos" is never used to describe human power, it is reserved for divine power almost exclusively in the New Testament (the only use not like this would be Heb.2:14 where it is used to describe Satans power.) Our translations don't get this across too awfully well, it is a shame too. It tells me that God's power is infinitely greater than anything man can bring together. In use with the rest of the passage here in 1 Tim 6:11-16 one can easily read how it relates to overwhelming security we the believer have in God being the sole Sovereign and the highest power above all creation.

Though Greek is not my true course to follow, something along the lines of theology seems more in oder, I shall always endeavor to use it to compliment and enhance my devotion and studies.
