![]() Thursday, April 24, 2003 I read on the internet something about how McDonalds was planning on tossing into the market a couple of modified McDonald's restraunts where they would have the same basic McDonald in one part, but two other parts would be a coffee shop and a bakery. This is a move to attempt to meet a culture that is drastically changing in how they involve themselves in commerce. McDonalds is probably running scared because they finally posted a loss for a quarter and the rapid growth within the industry as a whole is bringing them competition that they can't deal with in ways they didn't expect. I fully expect to see this idea die away, because nobody in the important age demographic (18-39) wants to go to a McDonalds for anything other than a happy meal or a Big Mac. There certainly isn't any way that a McStarbucks concept will work either. People go to Starbucks to buy a specialized drink (and will pay that specialized price) and sit in the atmosphere of Starbucks over almost any other place. From my own personal experience I have found that I can focus better and get more done sitting at the local Starbucks (Alex you're the man!) chillin with a mocha and my laptop. Starbucks even has a WiFi system installed in some of their locales and the business there is skyrocketting. This is exactly what McDonalds can't compete with; people today know they can get a highly customizable experience with the atmosphere attached (i.e. the Cool attached) and McDonalds can't provide that...all they have is a jungle gym for the kids and that omnipresent McStinky smell in each of their restraunts. The American culture has moved past McDonalds. This applies to the church as well. We need to recognize what it is that the culture is more apt to do and help them along. Obviously this doesn't mean sacrificing our doctrine and beliefs on the altar of consumerism, rather we can take those and implement them to a culture that will respond to them. (Note: I'll give you my vision for an emergent church concept within the next day or so) We need to understand the cookie cutter McDonalds days are over and people want a stylized situation that brings them into an atmosphere of community. If we continue to miss this we will continue to miss the culture boat as it pulls out of port. posted by Preachin Jesus | 3:10 PM | |
