Monday, May 17, 2004 Holman Christian Standard Bible
Well with the other fifteen or so translations of the Bible that have come out over the last several years I recently got a copy of the newest, the Holman Christian Standard. Being that my mother is a trustee of Lifeway she gets a box of the newest Broadman & Holman books every quarter. (You can imagine that for a bibliophile like myself this is an excellent thing) Part of this recent (and sadly last) shipment was a hardback copy of the HCSB. I'll be honest in my comments about the translation. At first I was skeptical, primarily because I know part of the story behind why the translation was needed, and I did not really see the need for another translation. With the recent surge in translations over the last several years (ESV, TNIV, HCSB, NET Bible, etc.) I still have my doubts over why we need some of these. Granted if its a bad translation (I point to the TNIV with my bonny finger) I believe the public will respond by not buying it, and this has happened. Zondervan can't give away copies of that thing, I know they tried at my regional ETS meeting and few picked it up. Now I do enjoy using the ESV, it on my Axim right now, though some of their renderings I don't particularly like. The HCSB is the latest addition to the cache of Bible translations. I looked through it and have run through a couple translation issues in the NT and OT alike and found it to be an satisfying translation. While they punted on a few participle renderings and missed (in my humble opinion) picking up on an inflected theological assertion of a text or two, the translation is reliable and useful. I'll be using it as I teach my singles class in Sunday School. Now I don't think this will replace my trusty NKJV for preaching anytime soon, but it is certainly an excellent tool for use in preparation for messages and teaching time.
