SBC Convention

This week has been the time for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention. Of course the media usually watches this meeting with baited breath to see if any good (read: controversial) stories will come out of the meeting. This year has been marked with the usual business that the convention must work through. Several proposals have come and gone. The education proposal, which called Southern Baptists to pull their children out of public schools, was never released from the proposal committee. In fact it was defeated soundly by a unanimous vote against its submission. Of course this brought a sigh of relief from many Southern Baptists who feared the reactionary tone of the proposal. As a graduate from public schools I had a good experience there and had plenty of opportunities be an example for Christ and grow in ways that no private Christian school or homeschooling activity could have provided. I'll post more on this later.

Another matter that came up was sole membership of the Southern Baptist Convention in regards to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. This means that as an incorporated entity, like all the other SBC agencies, the sole member of the corporation would be the convention itself. There are a lot of legal issues surrounding this but one of the things that this gets down to is having each of the agencies of the SBC directly accountable to the convention itself. I have mixed feelings about this, but do trust the leadership that this is a good thing. For one this will bring under the umbrella of both protection and guidance the various agencies. This will provide for the continued coherency of each agency with the theological beliefs of the convention. A problem that comes up is the intricacy of Louisiana law, and whether this is actually a viable option in that state. Regardless, I am at an impasse as to whether this will end up happening without a further fight.

The convention has acted this year to remember the conservative foundation of the convention and the return to proper, biblical doctrines which our convention has historically held over the last 25 years. This resurgence has been good for the convention and good for the nation. Our devotion to missions and the Kingdom has been furthered because of this great endeavor.

All that said, I am a proud Southern Baptist.
