Summer Movie Sadness

Well its getting into the middle point of the summer and I must say its been good so far. One of the things that I always look forward to every summer is the opportunity to get some great movies in theatres and enjoy a several hour excursion from reality. Sadly, this summer has been a dismal failure on that front. When I survey the field of film entertainment available to us I see rehashing of old films, dressed up with a new look and (obviously) new actors; sequels to successful films from past summers; over-budget flops; comedic ventures; or some science fiction quest for the clearly stated.

Now I have seen several movies already this summer, and have ruled out some just because I tire of the Hollywood establishment attempting to tell the theatre going public what we must like. I truly enjoyed Dodgeball, Shrek 2, and Spiderman 2. These movies all offered a great escape. Yet the only other picture I'm looking forward to seeing is Will Smith in I, Robot. Even this movie reeks of a rehashed old story line, seeing as it just an Isaac Asimov series brought to the screen. I am not seeing the Hollywood put forth either the effort or creative forces into bringing new plot lines and stories to the screen. I just wonder how long it will be before we can expect to see all the great older movies remade into high-budget, glossy flicks for lack of being able to present fresh fodder to the public. It is not for lack of trying, but as I look at the marquee of the theatres in my daily travels I see drivel occupying the space.

This said I have made it a point to escape into a great classic or two while waiting for Hollywood to attempt to capture the greatness of Dickens, James, Austen, Twain, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, etc. I find engagement through their works far more impacting than a simply two hour sit in a darkened room with strangers.
