The problem with Gov. James McGreevey

The major news story in New Jersey, and in the world of politics, over the last two days is the announcement of an impending departure from office of the New Jersey Governor James McGreevey. (Article: Here!) This is a telling tale for the problem of sin, particularly sexual sin. While my prayers are for healing within the family and those affected I must say this presents an interesting dilemma for the homosexual activists. While this will most certainly become a political power play for both sides of the aisle, as opposed to a more appropriate behind-closed doors matters, there wreckage that will occur to the marriage is one which is the most damaging.

The current chorus being sent up from the gaggle of homosexual political activists is that homosexual activity (particularly martial unions) are of no harm to the state of the family. Here is an example of deviant homosexual behavior which will have a caustic affect on one family. A man, by all accounts, holding a good marriage commits a set of acts with another man, violating the natural sexual order, and degrades his union with his wife. More insulting to the state of marriage is that Gov. McGreevey is a Roman Catholic, and we certainly know well the Roman Catholic Church's universal condemnation (rightly so) of all homosexual activity. Here we have a situation where because of homosexual promiscuity the state of marriage has been deeply and gravely affected. The problem for the Democrats (and possibly for the Republicans) and the pro-homosexual rhetoric coming from that camp(s) is because of inappropriate activity there has been hurt accorded. While the Governor's wife has been silent on this matter, I doubt that there is anyone who would suggest this was an easy task to stand next to her husband yesterday as he made is statement. (Read the transcript) Who is going to stand up for the union of a man and woman, that sacred union between two people that is to bind them together in the blessing of the Church? For all the public posturing, rhetoric, and accusations that will be cast back and forth I wonder if anyone will give pause for a moment to realize the gravity of Governor McGreevey's statement: "I am a gay American."

By confessing that he has a sexual orientation contrary to the union which he holds with his wife, Governor McGreevey leaves but one option for that union...the ending of the marriage union. What would hold it together other than simply political politeness? What reason do these two people have to remain together other than courtesy for the sake of public performance? There is nothing sacred and pure about their union any longer. They seem to vying for the affections of the same gender, what would keep them together? So Governor McGreevey is left with a second failed marriage in light of his choice to accept the sinful practice of homosexual behavior. The pro-homosexual activist is left with a failed marriage and wife weeping for the husband who left her. This is not a cogent argument for their cause.

What should come out of this situation should be a national discussion over the devastation that the pro-homosexual agenda has left. The statistics reflecting the marriages wrecked, children left parentless, the rapid spreading of sexually transmitted diseases, increased suicide rates, and other moral degradation should be stood toe-to-toe with the flowery arguments of the pro-homosexual agenda activist. This debate, if held with both sides presenting their facts, would lead towards a national recognition of the inconsistency in the pro-homosexual agenda position.

While I don't believe Governor McGreevey should be forced to resign, he has committed no offense against the voters or office where he serves, I do believe there needs to be a universal call for both sides of the aisle to not politicize this matter. The Repbulicans have already called for his immediate resignation, yet presented no coherent argument for that move. The Democrats will stand behind their man in office, rightly so, but will shout down the Republicans for calling for the resignation and tell voters this kind of vitrol shouldn't be tolerated in an election year. Its a rock and a hard place...but inevitably it will get politicized so long as the media has a camera and microphone available for a politician.

Another area I am interested in watching is how Rome will respond to his. With the abandonment of mainline Roman Catholics from traditional, sacred Church teachings on abortion, homosexuality, and other issues the Church in Rome needs to respond quickly and appropriately. In the past they had more tools to work with, though I suspect Vatican II has left them with more wet-noodles than anything. I support much of what goes on in the Roman Catholic Church, for I believe they are both a Christian institution and great aid to the Kingdom. This should be an interesting time for the RCC.
