Experiencing God

Someone posted a thread asking how one has experienced God in their life on another one of my forums (which shall remain nameless for now.) Here is his original post:

I recently passed out a questionaire at my church asking people to share how they have experienced God in their lives. I was and still am very interested in this topic. To my dismay only a few people responded. Out of 1050 people I got back 5! It makes me wonder, have people spent so much time trying to know about God that they have forgetten to get to know Him personally? I also wonder have we put him in a box that is so small htat we aren't able to experience Him? Or don't we want to?

My church is primarily a Traditional Church (not even contemporary).

I would love to hear your feelings on this as well as hear how you have experienced God in your lives!

Here's my response:

It makes me wonder, have people spent so much time trying to know about God that they have forgetten to get to know Him personally?

Actually with all the emotive junk that has inundated Christianity in recent years I'll suggest they don't know how to experience God. The Christian life doesn't fit the consumeristic, microwave ready culture of the West...it takes time and effort to develop a strong Christian identity and experience with God. Experiencing God is not just some emotional high done on Sundays, it is the process of continued growth and nuturing of faith and faithfulness of God whereby we can participate in the splendor of His glory.

I also wonder have we put him in a box that is so small htat we aren't able to experience Him? Or don't we want to?

We get God served in a box and in bite-sized portions through contemporary Christian culture. Few of us attempt to experience God differently because few of us know how to think independently of what the prevailing winds tell us. (Not being critical just generalizing and knowing full well most all people on [the unnamed website] aren't in this boat...praise Jesus!)

how they have experienced God in their lives.

I have experienced God through times of corporate worship, individual worship and reflection, reading the patristics, walking in the woods, translating Greek and Hebrew, watching a sunset, reading some theological works by people much smarter than me. I have experienced God sitting on a bench and in the midst of a crowd. Doesn't make a holier than anyone else, for I am the chief of all sinners; I simply have realized that getting to the point where I can make my experience with God a holistic life-choice is determined by the voracity with which I pursue the knowledge of Him. Though its not an academic exercise, it is a practical, time-tested involvement in historical thought, contemporary ideas, Scriptural meditation, insights from people smarter and more spiritual than I, life-choice worship, and corporate edification.

I am the chief of all sinners, Christ has made me new. I merit none of this outside of His grace and faithfulness to me when I am unfaithful to Him.
