Friday Night Lights

Well I got to spend a lovely evening with my beloved and part of that evening involved going and watching the movie Friday Night Lights. I really was looking forward to the movie since I've read the book and because I really enjoy watching movies that portray the idiocy of over-indulgent athletic programs (i.e. Varsity Blues, the Program, etc.) Now we arrived at the theatre and made our way to perhaps the best view in the stadium seating and were comfortably sitting awaiting the (needlessly) lengthy previews. Then the high children filtered in and sat behind us providing commentary, urbane questions, and chatter throughout the movie which was bothersome and ignorable at the same time. I'll leave my thoughts on this matter to myself and continue with those on the movie.

I thought the movie was good, it was solid. Not an award winner, but good. It focused more on the actual football than some sordid immorality between a key player(s) and female(s). Though it showed briefly some of the party life that accompanies athletic fame in high school, the movie was about the football and the road to championship. The movie, though not as well as the book, shows how crazy people are about their high school football and how a small town in west Texas revolves around the high school team. From a cinematic perspective I enjoyed the camera work and how the film was done in a late-80s grainy color. Good stuff there. Some of the editing was abrupt and at several points camera angles were obscured, or downright misplaced.

The story line was good and the actors did good jobs portraying the characters they were assigned, though I wasn't too awfully impressed with Billy Bob Thorton's performance. The move show how big high school football is out here in Texas, and how crazy people are about their hometown teams. Good to go watch if you get a second.
