![]() Monday, October 25, 2004 I think I thinkWell not too much went on this weekend. I sat around, because my beloved is out of town on a gig, and did assignments for class. Nothing tremendously spectacular, just good, honest work. The success of his show on Comedy Central is proof enough that our generation is simply tired of the bygone era of canned reporters touting a line and presenting facts that are neither objective, nor spinless. So Stewart and his cohorts spin everything to the infinite degree and find an audience ready to hear their version. One of the more striking things that Stewart was in reply to a question on what he thought about a recent poll saying something like 18-30 year olds are getting their news from him more than anywhere else. His reply was something like: It isn't that they are getting their news from me, since most everyone already sits down and watches the news in the evening already informed. They are just turning to our show, already informed, looking to get some humor attached. He also pointed out that the days of a family sitting down and watching the 6:00 news cast with Peter, Tom, and Dan are long gone, the 24-hour networks are setting the cycles and informing more people than the major networks. This is why Stewart gets it: he realizes that people are being informed all day long and when looking for some sort of news show that enlightens and offers an escape from the daily routine. While we shouldn't necessarily embrace his methodologies and style, it is an interesting study on the shifting culture to see how this format is being accepted more and more. posted by Preachin Jesus | 11:13 AM | |
