![]() Thursday, October 28, 2004 Nationalized ElectionsWell, tis the season to be political, and with the impending election (and the resultant challenges) I have given some thought to problems of our system of election. First I'd like to say the Electoral College is a fine system, perhaps one Secondly, I believe we need to nationalize our presidential elections. We need to provide a system whereby we can return to a more pure form of voting and restore the faith of the electorate. Now I have given some rather serious thought to this and the process therein and have some observations and suggestions. After this last election we have seen many of the flaws in our current systems, and for better or worse we have seen that there is a need to correct of some these, or at least prevent accusations from being lodged. While elections have traditionally been purview of each particular state legislature, and for local and state office (including national Congress) I suggest they be integrated into this system I am proposing. This system does not negate the states' rights authority over elections as granted to them by Constitution, rather it maintains a system of checks and balances in which the electorate can have increased confidence in their voting system. One of the great peculiarities of our election system is wide variety of voting methods available to the public from state to state. The whole Florida debacle showed once again the problems with out-dated systems. To be frank, I am of the opinion that if you can't punch through a card all the way or you can't properly fill in a bubble or connect a box with a pen your vote shouldn't count and you should be referred to the proper "re-education" system. Therefore I believe we should have a group of third, or fourth, graders develop our system of voting. Why this young group? Because if they can do it, the average American adult should have little to no problem in accomplishing the task...you'd think. So I suggest that we have a National Ballot System that is the same for every election from now until Jesus comes back (though I strongly suspect He isn't coming soon) and can only be changed by a 2/3 vote of the House and Senate, and ratified by 3/4 of the State legislatures. We need a National Ballot that can be used from homeroom council elections to Presidential elections and everything in between. Therefore point one is: 1. A Nationalized Ballot SystemOkay now we need to allow for people to submit their votes in a manner that is both safe and secure, allowing them to have confidence in their votes. With this in mind I suggest we develop a National Voting Box for each precinct in all this great land to use. The box should be four feet tall, made of that armor used on tanks, with a slot in the top, a swing top built on recessed (i.e. inaccessible) hinges, with only one lock (and a darned good one at that) with a specific key to be held at the national collection center I am also proposing. This box has six inch thick walls and has two armed militia men guarding it at all times. The voters cast their ballots, on the National Ballot, and walk over and drop their ballot in the hole at the top (they can stand on a chair if needed to reach the 4 foot height) without folding, bending, etc. the ballot. They then get their "I voted sticker" and leave. The guards (armed with fully loaded automatic assault rifles) stand at their station until the end of the day. Then in each county a convoy (or if a large county multiple convoys) of military vehicles (Hummers) laden with high caliber assault weapons travels with an appropriate number of specially designed armored truck type units to collect these voting boxes. The national guard for each state will be designated to protect these convoys with appropriate measures to guarantee the safety of the pick up and delivery of the voting boxes. Thus point two: 2. Special voting boxesNow after these convoys have their voting boxes secured they travel to a state wide collection point (no matter how big the state) and the boxes are loaded onto armored semi-trailers and they are carted off to a centralized National Vote Counting Center. Of course still being protected by the military, this time it a convoy of Army units. Once the convoys arrive at the National Vote Counting Centers the boxes are off-loaded and taken to a central receiving point. Then after all the Voting Boxes are collected the National Registrar of Elections certifies each box and they are processed while being watched by the media and public through cable broadcasts and we have a group of nationally bonded and certified vote counters that are responsible for the tallying of the votes. Any international votes, and overseas military votes, will be collected at the appropriate bases or embassies of the respective country (since we have embassies in every country) and a special air force of cargo planes will pick up the voting boxes in these locations and ferry them to the National Voting Center. This National Vote Counting Center will be built like Fort Knox with no uncertified person allowed within 500 yards, there will be lots of tall fences with razor wire too. Since we have these neat systems that can count reams of money in seconds we should develop a system of counting the votes where we can processes several million votes over the course of several days with 100% accuracy. If someone has messed up their National Ballot, designed by third graders, they're vote simply doesn't count. (Its like the SATs, you forget to do something your answer is invalid) Now once the votes are processed, tallied, and verified by the National Registrar of Elections the results are placed in a secure briefcase and then escorted by a group of bonded National Voting Security Police 500 feet to a press conference room where a single video camera, able to be piggy-backed by all the other media outlets, broadcasts live the results for the national election as he announces them. The Presidential election result is announced first followed by the appropriate Senate and House races in alphabetical order of each state. The local elections will have been submitted to the appropriate State Registrars via telephone conversations for them to disseminate immediately following the National broadcast. So point number three: 3. National Vote Counting CenterOkay seems good all but what about the media trying to throw off the election by getting exit polls. Well I have considered this and, since I hold a fair amount of disdain for all media people, therefore suggest that laws be enacted that no exit polling or media coverage can come within 500 yards of any polling precinct. The media outlets in every state and nationwide is limited to simply saying that the election is under and doing their normal punditry. The media has kowtowed to the politicos and are under the foot of elites far too long and they have manipulated the public too much. They will not be allowed, by law to forecast winners or losers nor will they be able to, after the election and until the time of the national broadcast of election results, be able to publish polling data. (We stopped telemarketers, we can stop the media) So that is point four: 4. Prohibit Media InterferenceNow this seems to be awfully focused on using the military to monitor the elections and what happens if they try to perform a coup? Well, we have a citizenry that is armed and we simply take the jerks over. (That's why the 2nd amendment is important) Also we make sure there is a strong system of checks and balances at all points. This is a pretty coherent system, I believe, and will allow for a return to pure voting. Now we obviously won't have results immediately after the elections (i.e. that night) but in light of the 2000 debacle (and the media's recalcitrant attitude towards apologizing for screwing us up) this is a necessary means to and end. It restores the faith that every vote counts regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, creed, name, job, or any other possible discriminatory factor.
